Château de Serrant: A Loire Valley Gem

Château de Serrant, located in the charming commune of Saint-Georges-sur-Loire, is a magnificent Renaissance château that offers a captivating glimpse into French history and aristocratic life. Situated just 15 kilometers west of Angers, this architectural gem stands as the last of the great Loire châteaux when descending the river, boasting a rich history spanning over 500 years. The château's origins trace back to a medieval fortress, evident in the presence of a moat that still surrounds the structure today. In the 16th century, Charles de Brie initiated its transformation into a grand château, but financial constraints halted the project, leaving only the North Tower completed. The property changed hands several times before Guillaume Bautru, a State Councillor, acquired it in 1636 and revived the construction, adhering to de Brie's original plans to maintain design continuity. Bautru's efforts resulted in the addition of the central halls, two wings, and the South Tower, with Jules Hardouin-Mansart later completing the chapel. In 1749, Antoine Walsh, a wealthy merchant from Nantes of Irish Jacobite descent, purchased the estate. The Walsh family significantly contributed to the château's allure by redecorating the interior and creating an English-style park, complete with pavilions and a monumental gate adorned with their family crest. The château eventually passed to the de La Trémoïlle family in 1830 through marriage, and they undertook extensive restoration work, adding parapets and cornices. Today, Château de Serrant remains a private residence owned by the Prince of Merode, a descendant of the La Trémoïlle family, but it is open to visitors. The château's architecture showcases a harmonious blend of Renaissance and Classical styles, with its facades displaying both the local dark schist and white tuffeau stone. Inside, visitors can explore sumptuously furnished apartments, adorned with rare furniture, family portraits, ancient tapestries, and precious objects. The grand staircase, a masterpiece of Renaissance design, leads to the first floor, where the magnificent library awaits, housing over 12,000 period books. The library, established in the 17th century, is a treasure trove of knowledge, containing nearly 20,000 valuable works. The chapel, designed by the architect of the Hall of Mirrors at the Château de Versailles, houses the impressive mausoleum of the Marquis de Vaubrun, a testament to 18th-century funerary art. The kitchens, with their collection of 200 copper pans, offer a glimpse into the culinary splendor of the past. The English-style park surrounding the château provides a serene setting for a romantic stroll, featuring a lake that enhances the rustic character of the landscape. The estate also includes stables, a dovecote, and an orangery, adding to its charm and appeal. Château de Serrant has played host to notable figures throughout history, including Napoleon Bonaparte, who reportedly admired the château, exclaiming, "Finally, a Château in France!" The rehabilitation in 2016 of the Château's Orangerie, a splendid 18th-century building, has made it possible to diversify activities by hosting weddings and seminars within the estate. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours to fully appreciate the Domaine de Serrant. The park is accessible to all. Note that the château's staircase entrance renders it unsuitable for individuals with reduced mobility. The castle is open from April to November. The premises are not heated in the cold season, so remember to bundle up! Don't arrive too late, as the last entrance is at 5.15pm. The castle can be visited with or without a guide. The self-guided tour allows you to explore approximately 15 rooms of the castle but does not provide access to the library and prestige rooms. Indeed, for conservation reasons, these rooms are only accessible with a guide. It is strongly recommended to reserve your spots online to ensure you enjoy a guided tour.
