Discover more about Logis Barrault

Logis Barrault, located on Place Saint-Éloi in the historic center of Angers, is a captivating vestige of the city's past. Constructed between 1486 and 1493 for Olivier Barrault, a treasurer of Brittany and mayor of Angers, the mansion has hosted distinguished guests such as Caesar Borgia and Marie de Medici. The architecture features two main buildings connected by a tower with a spiral staircase, showcasing facades of schist and tuffeau stone. The Renaissance spiral staircase boasts a palm vault design reminiscent of those found in the castles of Beaugé, Saumur and Montsoreau. In 1673, Logis Barrault was transformed into a seminary before becoming home to the Museum of Fine Arts in 1801 and a public library in 1805. Today, the Musée des Beaux-Arts houses an extensive collection spanning paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts from the 14th century to the present. Visitors can also explore a gallery dedicated to the history of Angers, featuring archaeological finds and city archives. The museum is fully accessible to visitors with motor disabilities. Extensive renovations from 1999 to 2004 enhanced the building's museum functionality. The museum hosts temporary exhibitions, such as the Daniel Duclos collection, alongside its permanent displays.
