Discover more about Grosse Cloche

The Grosse Cloche, also known as the Porte Saint-Éloi, stands as a proud emblem of Bordeaux, with origins tracing back to the 13th century. Initially a simple passage in the city's defensive walls, it evolved into a fortified gate and belfry for the city hall. The structure has witnessed centuries of Bordeaux's history, from its time as a defensive structure to its role in civic life. The current bell, named Armande-Louise, was cast in 1775 and weighs a hefty 7,750 kilograms. Its Latin inscription speaks to its purpose: "I ring the hours and my voice is a call to arms, I sing for happy events and weep for the dead". Though it once signaled harvests, fires, and attacks, today, the bell rings only on the first Sunday of each month and on six major holidays throughout the year. The Grosse Cloche also served as a prison, where young offenders were locked away. Some cells remain, offering a glimpse into this darker chapter of its past. Above the archway, two conical spires flank a smaller tower topped with a golden lion, a symbol of England's historical influence in Bordeaux. The tower also features ornate clocks, one displaying solar time and the other marking the lunar cycle. Visitors can explore the Grosse Cloche and learn about its history and significance. Climbing to the top of the tower provides panoramic views of Bordeaux, including landmarks like the Pont de Pierre and the Basilica of Saint Michael.
