Place de la Victoire is one of Bordeaux's most iconic and historically significant squares, located at the southern end of the city's historic center. The square's origins trace back to 1302 when it was known as Saint Julien Square. It was renamed Place de la Victoire in 1918 to commemorate France's victory at the end of World War I.The square is punctuated by several major points of interest. The Porte d'Aquitaine, an imposing classical-style arch, serves as a historic and symbolic entrance to Bordeaux city center. Since 2005, the square has been adorned with a spectacular 16-meter obelisk made of red marble and two large bronze turtles, works by Czech artist Ivan Theimer. These sculptures celebrate Bordeaux's wine culture, with the turtles' shells engraved with the names of wine appellations.Today, Place de la Victoire is a lively hub, popular with students and tourists.
