Place de la Bourse, or Stock Exchange Square, is one of Bordeaux's most recognizable and beloved sights. Built between 1730 and 1775, this grand square marks a pivotal moment in Bordeaux's history, signifying its opening to the Garonne River and the world. Before its construction, the city was enclosed by medieval walls, limiting trade and expansion. The square's design, a masterpiece of neoclassical architecture, was conceived by Jacques Gabriel and completed by his son, Ange-Jacques Gabriel. Inspired by the Place Vendôme in Paris, the Place de la Bourse features harmonious proportions, elegant facades, and intricate details such as mascarons and wrought iron. The buildings surrounding the square originally housed the Stock Exchange and the Customs Hall, reflecting Bordeaux's economic importance.Throughout its history, the Place de la Bourse has undergone several transformations. Initially named Place Royale and adorned with an equestrian statue of Louis XV, it was later renamed Place de la Liberté during the French Revolution, when a Tree of Liberty replaced the statue. In 1869, the Fountain of the Three Graces, depicting the daughters of Zeus, was installed, becoming a beloved symbol of the square. In 2006, the Place de la Bourse gained a new attraction: the Miroir d'Eau, or Water Mirror.
