The Pont du Gard, a magnificent Roman aqueduct bridge, is a stunning example of ancient engineering and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Built in the 1st century AD, it was designed to carry water over 50 km to the Roman colony of Nemausus, now Nîmes. The bridge crosses the Gardon River near Vers-Pont-du-Gard in southern France. Rising to a height of 48.8 meters (160 feet), the Pont du Gard is the highest Roman aqueduct bridge in the world and one of the best-preserved. Its three tiers of arches demonstrate the Romans' mastery of hydraulic engineering and architectural technique. The bridge is composed of six arches on the first tier, eleven on the second, and thirty-five smaller arches on the third tier, which carries the water conduit. The precision of its construction, using an estimated 50,400 tonnes of stone, is particularly impressive considering it was built without mortar.
