Located on the Place des Quinconces, the Monument aux Girondins is a major landmark in Bordeaux, France. Erected between 1894 and 1902, this grand memorial commemorates the Girondist deputies, a group of moderates during the French Revolution who were ultimately victims of the Reign of Terror. The monument has been classified as a historical monument since March 16, 2011. The monument features a towering column reaching 54 meters, topped by a bronze statue of Liberty breaking its chains, symbolizing freedom and the triumph of the Republic. At the base of the column are two expansive basins adorned with bronze sculptures of horses and allegorical figures. These fountains depict scenes such as the triumph of the Republic and the triumph of Concord. The Place des Quinconces itself is historically significant. Laid out in 1820 on the site of the Château Trompette, its design was intended to prevent rebellion against the city. Today, the square is a central hub with the installation of a tram system in 2003. Visitors can also find statues of the Bordeaux philosophers Montaigne and Montesquieu on the side of the Quinconces closest to the city center.
