Discover more about Cimetière

La Cambe German War Cemetery is a poignant and expansive site in Normandy, France, serving as the final resting place for over 21,200 German soldiers who died during World War II. Most of these soldiers fell between June 6 and August 20, 1944, during the Battle of Normandy. The cemetery stands as one of six German war cemeteries in the region and is the largest and most visited. Originally, the site was established on June 10, 1944, as a battlefield cemetery by the American 607th Quartermaster Graves Registration Company. It held both American and German soldiers in adjacent fields. After the war, the American Battle Monuments Commission exhumed the American remains, transferring them according to the wishes of their families. In 1954, a Franco-German agreement designated La Cambe as one of the central German war cemeteries in Normandy. The Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge (German War Graves Commission) then consolidated remains from various provisional battlefield cemeteries, completing the task by 1961. The cemetery's layout features grave markers made of dark granite. A central tumulus, crowned with a granite cross, covers the remains of unidentified soldiers. The site also includes a visitor center with a permanent exhibition that uses archival documents, portraits, and testimonies to illustrate the impact of war on soldiers and civilians. The Garden of Peace, established between the cemetery and the road, features over 1,000 trees, each sponsored by a donor, symbolizing reconciliation. La Cambe stands as a place of remembrance, reflection, and a call for peace.
