Located in the heart of Caen, Old St. Stephen's Church, or Église Saint-Étienne-le-Vieux, is a testament to the city's enduring history. Founded around the 10th century, the church predates William the Conqueror's famous Abbaye aux Hommes, from which it gets its 'old' designation.Originally built in the Romanesque style, the church suffered severe damage during the Hundred Years' War, particularly in the sieges of 1346 and 1417. It was subsequently rebuilt in the Gothic style during the English occupation of the 15th century, incorporating pointed arches and larger windows. The octagonal lantern tower dates from this period.The church was deconsecrated in 1793 and fell into disrepair, leading to its closure in 1844. Although saved from demolition, it faced further destruction during World War II when a shell struck the nave in 1944. Today, the roofless ruins remain unrestored, offering a glimpse into the past. Visitors can admire the remaining carvings and stained glass, testaments to its former glory. The site is a reminder of Caen's turbulent past and its ability to endure.

From the Caen train station, head southeast on Rue de la Gare, then turn left onto Rue de la Liberté. Continue straight until you reach Place Saint-Étienne le Vieux. After exiting the tram, walk straight down Rue de la Liberté, which will lead you to Place Saint-Étienne le Vieux. The church will be located at the square. A single tram ticket costs €1.60 and is valid for one hour.
