Lac Blanc: A Mirror to Mont Blanc
Experience the iconic alpine vista of Lac Blanc in Chamonix, where the majestic Mont Blanc massif reflects in the pristine waters of a high-altitude lake within the Aiguilles Rouges Nature Reserve.
Lac Blanc, nestled high in the Aiguilles Rouges National Nature Reserve near Chamonix, offers arguably the most iconic and breathtaking views of the Mont Blanc massif. This stunning alpine lake, often reflecting the snow-capped peaks in its crystal-clear waters, is a magnet for hikers and photographers alike. Reaching Lac Blanc involves a scenic journey via gondola and chairlift, followed by a rewarding hike through dramatic alpine terrain. The lake itself sits at an elevation of 2,352 meters (7,716 feet), providing a panoramic vista that encompasses the Aiguille Verte, Les Drus, and the Mer de Glace. A small refuge at the lake offers refreshments and basic meals, making it a perfect spot to relax and soak in the awe-inspiring scenery. Be prepared for crowds, especially during peak season, and remember that swimming is prohibited to protect this fragile environment.

Local tips
- Arrive early, especially during peak season (July-August), to avoid crowds on the trails and at the Flégère gondola.
- Check the weather forecast before you go and be prepared for changing conditions, as mountain weather can be unpredictable.
- Wear sturdy hiking boots and bring layers of clothing, including a waterproof jacket, as the trail can be rocky and the temperature can vary.
- Bring plenty of water and snacks, especially if you plan to hike beyond Lac Blanc, as there are limited options for purchasing supplies on the trail.
- Be aware of the altitude and take it easy, especially if you're not used to hiking at high elevations, to avoid altitude sickness.

Public Transport & Hiking
From Chamonix, take the local bus (free with the Carte d'Hôte tourist card) or drive to Les Praz de Chamonix, the departure point for the La Flégère gondola. From the bus stop 'La Flégère', walk a short distance to the gondola station. Purchase a round-trip ticket (€20 for adults) for the La Flégère gondola and ascend to the Flégère mid-station. From there, you have two options: either hike directly to Lac Blanc (approx. 1h45, steeper climb) or take the L'Index chairlift (€13.50 for adults one way) to a higher starting point, followed by a shorter, but more technical, hike (approx. 45min-1h15). The trail from L'Index is well-marked, heading downhill initially towards Lac du Fouet, then traversing a rocky spur before ascending to Lac Blanc. Note that the Mont Blanc Multipass (€95-€215 depending on duration) covers both the gondola and chairlift. Check the lift operating schedule in advance, as it varies seasonally.
