Subé Fountain, Champagne Travel Guide

The Subé Fountain, inaugurated in 1906, stands as a proud symbol of Reims. Located in the heart of Place Drouet d'Erlon, this monumental fountain replaced a statue of Marshall Drouet d'Erlon and quickly became a focal point of the city. The fountain was commissioned thanks to a donation of 200,000 gold francs from Auguste Subé, a native of Reims, and designed by architect André Najoux.The fountain's design showcases the Art Nouveau style, popular at the time of its creation, with flowing lines and organic forms. Standing 17 meters high, its central column is decorated with vine patterns. At the base, four statues represent the rivers of the Marne region: the Marne, Vesle, Suippe, and Aisne. Each river is depicted with water flowing from a shell, symbolizing the region's waterways. The fountain is topped by a gilded statue named 'La Gloire' (The Glory), installed in 1989, replacing the original bronze statue that was removed by German forces during World War II.Throughout its history, the Subé Fountain has been a silent witness to Reims' triumphs and tribulations. Miraculously, it survived the devastation of World War I, when much of the city was destroyed. Today, the Subé Fountain remains a vibrant landmark, drawing visitors and locals alike. It's a popular meeting place, surrounded by shops, restaurants, and gardens, making it an integral part of urban life in Reims. At night, the fountain is beautifully illuminated, creating a magical atmosphere.
