Discover more about Wasserplatz - Hochbehälter Schlossberg

The Wasserplatz, situated on the Schlossberg in Freiburg im Breisgau, is more than just a functional reservoir; it's a destination that encapsulates the city's history, engineering prowess, and natural beauty. The Hochbehälter Schlossberg, the reservoir itself, is a vital component of Freiburg's water supply system, ensuring that the city's residents have access to clean and reliable water. However, the area surrounding the reservoir, known as the Wasserplatz, has evolved into a cherished public space offering panoramic views and a tranquil atmosphere. The Schlossberg, or Castle Hill, has a rich history dating back to the 11th century when Berthold II, Duke of Zähringen, built a castle on the hill to control trade routes. Over the centuries, the castle was taken over by various rulers, including the Counts of Freiburg, the Habsburgs, and French occupiers. The fortifications were repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt due to their strategic importance. Today, the Schlossberg is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, offering hiking trails, historical ruins, and stunning views of the city and the Black Forest. The Hochbehälter Schlossberg, the reservoir at the heart of the Wasserplatz, was constructed to store and distribute water to the city. The reservoir is an impressive feat of engineering, with its large capacity and intricate system of pipes and valves. While the reservoir itself is not open to the public, its presence adds to the unique character of the Wasserplatz. In 2019, the reservoir underwent a major renovation to ensure the continued reliability and quality of Freiburg's water supply. The renovation involved the installation of new polyethylene panels to create a hygienic and watertight lining for the water chambers. The Wasserplatz offers visitors a variety of activities and attractions. Walking paths wind through the area, providing access to various viewpoints and historical sites. The Kanonenplatz, a former cannon emplacement, offers stunning views of Freiburg's Old Town, including the iconic Freiburg Minster. The Schlossbergturm, a 35-meter-high observation tower, provides a 360-degree panorama of the city, the Rhine Plain, and the Black Forest. The tower was constructed in 2002 and financed primarily through donations. For those interested in hiking, the Schlossberg offers a network of well-maintained trails. The trails range in difficulty, from easy walks to more challenging hikes. One popular trail leads to the Kleiner Kanonenplatz and Fort Carre, offering a glimpse into the region's military history. The trails are also rich in biodiversity, with dense forests of beech and oak trees providing habitat for a variety of wildlife. The Wasserplatz is also a great place to relax and enjoy the natural surroundings. Benches are scattered throughout the area, providing ample seating for visitors to take in the views. The Dattler Schlossberg Restaurant, located near the Schlossbergbahn station, offers a place to grab a bite to eat or a refreshing drink. The restaurant also has a terrace with panoramic views of the city. The Wasserplatz is easily accessible from Freiburg's city center. Visitors can walk up the Schlossberg via a footpath opposite the Schwabentor, or take the Schlossbergbahn, a funicular railway that transports passengers from the Stadtgarten to the Dattler Restaurant in just three minutes. The Schlossbergbahn is wheelchair and stroller accessible, making it a convenient option for visitors with mobility issues. The Wasserplatz on the Schlossberg is a destination that offers something for everyone. Whether you're interested in history, engineering, nature, or simply relaxing and enjoying the views, the Wasserplatz is sure to provide a memorable experience. Its blend of functionality and beauty makes it a unique and worthwhile addition to any Freiburg itinerary. The combination of the working reservoir and the recreational space creates a special atmosphere, inviting visitors to appreciate both the practical and aesthetic aspects of this elevated location.
