Discover more about Colombi Palace

The Colombi Palace, or Colombischlössle, is an architectural landmark in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany, located at Rotteckring 5. Built between 1859 and 1861, it was commissioned by Countess Maria Antonia Gertrudis von Zea Bermudez y Colombi as her residence. The palace was designed by Georg Jakob Schneider in the English Gothic Tudor style, drawing inspiration from Friedrich Eisenlohr's Ortenberg Castle. The palace is situated on the site of a former bastion of Freiburg's fortifications, offering an elevated position. The surrounding Colombi Park, designed in the style of an English landscape garden, features exotic plants, trees, and a fountain, providing a green oasis in the city. The park is open to the public and includes a vineyard trail. After the Countess's death, the city of Freiburg acquired the Colombi Palace in 1899. It served as the urban art museum from 1909 to 1923 and later housed government offices. Since 1983, the Colombi Palace has been home to the Archaeological Museum Colombischlössle, displaying artifacts from the Stone Age to the Middle Ages. The museum enhances the visitor experience with interactive exhibits and an ArCo-Museum app. The Colombi Palace and its park have been designated a national heritage site since 2003, preserving this unique historical and cultural landmark.
