Discover more about Pl. des Dominicains

Pl. des Dominicains is a vibrant square located in the heart of Colmar, France. The square is named after the Dominican Church (Eglise des Dominicains) that dominates its eastern side. The square is a popular meeting place, embraced by lovely architecture and adorned with quaint cafes. The Dominican Church, also known as Église des Dominicains, is a remarkable example of Gothic architecture. Construction began in 1283 and mostly dates back to the first half of the 14th century. The Dominican order established themselves in Colmar in the late 13th century, and the church became an important part of their presence. The church's architecture showcases a soaring nave, pointed arches, and ribbed vaults. Inside, light filters through exquisite stained-glass windows from the 14th century, which depict scenes from the life of Christ. One of the most significant features is Martin Schongauer's 'Madonna of the Rose Bush,' created in 1473. Throughout its history, the Dominican Church has undergone several transformations. In 1458, a fire damaged the roof and cloister, requiring reconstruction. In the 18th century, Baroque decorations were added. During the French Revolution, it was used for secular purposes, including military storage and as a corn exchange. In 1898, it was returned to its original purpose as a place of worship. Today, the Dominican Church stands as a symbol of Colmar's cultural and religious heritage. During the Christmas season, the Pl. des Dominicains transforms into a magical Christmas market. About sixty small houses snuggle up and offer Christmas decorations and festive meals.
