The Théâtre Municipal de Colmar, located at 3 Rue des Unterlinden, is a cultural landmark in the heart of Colmar. Constructed between 1847 and 1849, it replaced a former part of the Unterlinden convent and opened its doors to the public on March 8, 1849. The theater's design, inspired by classicism, is the work of architect Louis-Michel Boltz, who also designed Colmar's covered market. The interior design, in the Italian theater tradition, is by Parisian artist Boulangé.The theater's elegant exterior features a French-style facade with five bays. Inside, the circular auditorium includes three galleries. Over the years, the Théâtre Municipal has undergone several renovations, including an expansion in 1902 and a major interior renovation from 1999 to 2000. These updates have improved the theater's facilities and audience comfort.Today, the Théâtre Municipal de Colmar continues to play a vital role in the city's cultural life. Each season, the theater presents a diverse program of performances, including boulevard theater, musical humor, family shows, and concerts. It also hosts productions by the Opéra National du Rhin and other local organizations.
