Discover more about Colline du Château

Colline du Château, also known as Castle Hill, is a prominent landmark in Nice, offering visitors a unique blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and breathtaking panoramic views. Rising 92 meters above sea level, this hill overlooks the city, providing stunning vistas of the Baie des Anges, the Old Town (Vieux Nice), and the harbor. Historically, the site has been occupied since ancient times, with archaeological evidence revealing Celtic and Roman remains. In the 3rd century BC, the Greeks founded the city of Nikaia on this hill. Later, it was occupied by a medieval castle that stood from the 11th to the 18th century. The castle was eventually destroyed in 1706 by the troops of Louis XIV, leaving only the Tour Bellanda from the 16th century. Today, Colline du Château is a public park offering various attractions and activities for visitors of all ages. The park features lush greenery, walking paths, a man-made waterfall, and several viewpoints offering different perspectives of Nice and its surroundings. Visitors can explore the ruins of the ancient cathedral of Sainte-Marie, built in the 11th and 12th centuries, and discover mosaics and walkways that evoke the hill's rich history. Families with children will appreciate the park's playground and picnic areas. There are also cafes and gift shops where visitors can relax and purchase souvenirs. For those interested in history, the Bellandarium, a small museum near the Bellanda Tower, displays dioramas and explanations of Castle Hill's history. Colline du Château is easily accessible from the Old Town via a lift or stairs. The free elevator is located at the end of the Quai des États-Unis. Alternatively, visitors can take the stairs (Escalier Lesage) from the Old Town or walk up the less steep paths from Montée du Château or Montée Eberlé.
