Place Grangier is a prominent square in Dijon's city center, offering visitors a glimpse into the city's architectural evolution. The square is named in honor of Henri Grangier (1842-1902) and his wife Sophie Villeneuve (1851-1905), who were benefactors of the city.From the late Middle Ages to the late 19th century, the imposing Château de Dijon stood on this site. However, it was demolished between 1891 and 1897 amidst much controversy. In the early 20th century, the area was redeveloped, and between 1907 and 1909, the Hôtel des Postes (Post Office) was constructed in a Louis XVI-inspired style by architect Louis Perreau. The building features a corner adorned with a monumental clock and sculptures by Paul Gasq.The buildings surrounding Place Grangier showcase a mix of architectural styles, including Art Nouveau and Art Deco. The Hôtel des Postes, now known as Postes Grangier, stands as an architectural complex with Louis XVI-inspired elements. The square also features more modern buildings, creating a diverse architectural landscape. In April 1916, a monument honoring the Grangier couple was erected on the square, further cementing their legacy in the city.Today, Place Grangier is a lively social hub where locals and tourists gather. Visitors can admire the well-preserved facades, relax at quaint cafes, and explore nearby shops offering local delicacies and handcrafted souvenirs.
