Discover more about Church of Saint John of Dijon

The Church of Saint John of Dijon, located at 9 Rue Danton, boasts a rich history dating back to the 15th century. Built between 1448 and 1470, during the peak of the Duchy of Burgundy, the church served as a collegiate church of canons. Its Flamboyant Gothic style reflects the architectural trends of the time. Originally built on the site of a 4th-century basilica, the church has undergone several transformations throughout its history. During the French Revolution, it was repurposed as a market and warehouse, during which its spires and turrets were destroyed. Worship was re-established in the 19th century, from 1862 to 1972. In 1974, the church was transformed to accommodate the Théâtre Dijon Bourgogne, now a national dramatic center. Today, the building serves as a unique blend of historical architecture and contemporary performing arts. While the exterior retains its detailed stonework, the interior provides a tranquil atmosphere, with light filtering through stained-glass windows. The theater hosts various cultural events and performances throughout the year.
