Discover more about The Marqueyssac gardens

The Marqueyssac Gardens, a listed National Historical Monument, are located in Vézac, in the heart of the Dordogne Valley. These romantic and picturesque gardens surround an early 19th-century château with a traditional stone-tiled roof. The gardens are most famous for their over 6 kilometers of shaded pathways, bordered by 150,000 hand-carved, centuries-old box trees. The history of Marqueyssac dates back to the 17th century when Bertrand Vernet de Marqueyssac constructed the initial terraces. In 1861, Julien de Cerval inherited the property and dedicated 30 years to transforming the gardens into what they are today. Inspired by Italian gardens, he planted tens of thousands of boxwood trees and introduced ornamental species like cypress and umbrella pines. The gardens fell into disrepair in the 20th century but were restored in 1996 by Kléber Rossillon and opened to the public in 1997. Visitors can explore three main routes: the Promenade des Falaises (Cliff Walk), the Promenade des Hauteurs (High Walk), and the Grande Allée. The highlight is the Belvédère de la Dordogne, offering a 360° view of the valley's castles and villages from 130 meters above the Dordogne River. The gardens also feature rockeries, waterfalls and green theaters. Children can enjoy a boxwood maze, play areas and creative workshops. Special events include Candlelight Evenings in July and August and Easter egg hunts.
