Discover more about Fort du Mont Alban

Fort du Mont Alban, constructed between 1557 and 1560, stands as a sentinel overlooking Nice and the Bay of Villefranche. Ordered by Duke Emmanuel Philibert of Savoy, the fort was a key element in the defense of the Savoyard state, guarding against French and Ottoman incursions. Architect Domenico Ponsello designed the fort with a star-shaped bastion to counter new artillery techniques. Strategically positioned 220 meters above sea level, the fort offers unparalleled views. To the west, the vista extends over the Baie des Anges towards the Esterel Massif, while to the east, the panorama encompasses the harbor of Villefranche-sur-Mer and the Italian Riviera. On clear days, Corsica is sometimes visible. The fort itself is a rectangular structure, measuring approximately 40 by 46 meters, with ramparts and corner bastions. It could house a garrison of around 50 soldiers. Throughout its history, the fort has been captured by various forces, including the French in 1691 and 1792. It also served as a prison in the late 17th century. Classified as a historical monument, Fort du Mont Alban has undergone preservation efforts to maintain its structure. Today, visitors can explore the fort, soak in the breathtaking views, and delve into the region's rich military history.
