Discover more about Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte

Step back in time at the Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte, a magnificent 17th-century estate that epitomizes French elegance and served as a model for the Palace of Versailles. Located in Maincy, about an hour's drive southeast of Paris, this architectural gem was created for Nicolas Fouquet, the Superintendent of Finances for Louis XIV. The château is the result of the collaboration of three of the greatest artists of the era: architect Louis Le Vau, landscape architect André Le Nôtre, and painter-decorator Charles Le Brun. Fouquet's lavish tastes and ambition resulted in a palace and gardens that were unparalleled in their beauty and grandeur. The château features exquisite interiors, period furnishings, and impressive formal gardens. Visitors can explore the state rooms, Fouquet's private apartments, and the cellars, as well as a carriage museum. However, Fouquet's success was short-lived. His extravagant fête for Louis XIV in 1661 aroused the king's suspicion and jealousy, leading to Fouquet's arrest and imprisonment. The king then appropriated many of the artworks and tapped Le Vau, Le Brun, and Le Nôtre to build the Palace of Versailles. Today, the Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte is privately owned and offers visitors a glimpse into the opulence and intrigue of 17th-century France. Don't miss the candlelit evenings, which offer a magical experience as the château and gardens are illuminated by thousands of candles.
