The Gloriette de Buffon, nestled within the Jardin des Plantes in Paris, is a testament to both architectural innovation and the scientific spirit of the Enlightenment. Constructed between 1786 and 1787, it stands as one of the oldest metal structures in Paris. Commissioned by Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, who was the superintendent of the Jardin du Roi (the former name of the Jardin des Plantes), the Gloriette was designed by Edme Verniquet, an architect of King Louis XVI, and built by Claude-Vincent Mille, a locksmith of the King.Standing at approximately 8 meters tall, the circular structure is made of iron and bronze. Its eight columns support a latticed dome, creating an airy and elegant space. The structure is positioned atop a mound, known as the “grand labyrinthe”, offering elevated views of the surrounding gardens.
