Quai de la Tournelle: A Seine-Side Stroll

Quai de la Tournelle, located in the 5th arrondissement, is a picturesque walkway along the Seine River, offering some of the most iconic views of Paris. Facing the Île Saint-Louis and providing a stunning perspective of the Notre-Dame Cathedral, this quay is steeped in history and charm. The name 'Tournelle' originates from a turret that was once part of the Philip Augustus city wall in the 12th century. This turret was later replaced by the Château de la Tournelle. The quay itself was created in 1554, replacing the street and port of Saint-Bernard. Today, the Quai de la Tournelle is known for its tranquil atmosphere, offering a respite from the bustling city. Along the Quai, visitors can find numerous bouquinistes (booksellers) selling antique books and prints. Several hôtels particuliers (private mansions) line the street, showcasing beautiful 17th and 18th-century architecture. Notable buildings include the former Hôtel de Clermont-Tonnerre (No. 27), Hôtel du President Rolland (No. 37), Hôtel de Miramion (No. 47), and Hôtel de Nesmond (Nos. 55-59). The famous Tour d'Argent restaurant, established in 1582, is located at No. 15. The Pont de la Tournelle, which connects the 4th and 5th arrondissements, is a notable feature. Reconstructed in 1928, the bridge is known for its asymmetrical design and the statue of Saint Genevieve, the patron saint of Paris, which stands on the left bank.
