Discover more about Chain Tower

The Chain Tower, or Tour de la Chaîne, stands as a proud sentinel at the entrance to La Rochelle's Old Port. Constructed between 1382 and 1390, this medieval tower, along with its counterpart, the Tour Saint-Nicolas, controlled access to the harbor with a large iron chain that could be raised or lowered to allow or deny passage to ships. The captain of the tower monitored boat movements and collected fees. Over the centuries, the tower has served various purposes. In 1472, King Louis XI visited the tower, and legend says he etched an inscription on one of the tower's windows with his diamond ring. During the Fronde, a 17th-century uprising, it was used as a gunpowder store, which led to an explosion that left it open-topped for 300 years. Restoration work in the 20th and 21st centuries has rebuilt the crenellated walkway, added a new roof, and restored the interiors. Today, the Chain Tower is a classified historical monument that welcomes visitors to explore its interior rooms, which once served as housing, military quarters, or technical spaces. Temporary exhibitions are often on display, and the tower's terraces provide exceptional panoramic views of the city and the sea. The tower also houses a permanent exhibition that commemorates the departure of the first settlers to Quebec from La Rochelle over 400 years ago.
