    Carcassonne, a UNESCO World Heritage site, has stood for 2,500 years, evolving from a Roman settlement to a medieval stronghold. The fortress assumed prominence between the 11th and 13th centuries, during which the Trencavel viscounts constructed the Château Comtal. Over the centuries, it has been occupied by Gauls, Romans, Visigoths and Saracens.Today, the Cité features 3 km of double ramparts and 52 towers. The fortress was restored in the 19th century by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc. Visitors can explore the narrow, winding streets, discover artisan shops, and dine in traditional restaurants. Key attractions include the Château Comtal, a 12th-century castle with a museum, and the Basilica of Saint-Nazaire, showcasing Romanesque and Gothic architecture.The legend of Lady Carcas adds a touch of local folklore. According to the tale, she cleverly defended the city against a siege, leading to its name, "Carcas Sonne".
