Driving

From Duilhac-sous-Peyrepertuse, follow the D14 in the direction of the 'Route du Château' for approximately 2.5 km. Parking is available near the site, but can be limited. Note that buses and camping cars longer than 7 meters have a designated parking area located halfway between the village and the castle. From the parking area, it's approximately a 20-minute walk to the ticket office. Parking is free.

From the village of Duilhac-sous-Peyrepertuse, follow the marked trail uphill towards the castle. The walk takes approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour and involves a steep climb. Ensure you have appropriate footwear. There are no costs involved for the final approach.

Perched at an altitude of 800 meters, Château de Peyrepertuse is a breathtaking spectacle. This ruined fortress, located in the commune of Duilhac-sous-Peyrepertuse, Aude, is a striking example of medieval military architecture and a key site in the history of the Cathar region. The castle's origins trace back to the 10th century, with the first mention in 1020. Its strategic position allowed it to monitor the border with Aragon. In the 12th century, after the Albigensian Crusade, King Louis IX of France transformed Peyrepertuse into a royal fortress. It became a vital part of France's southern defense until the Treaty of the Pyrenees in 1659. The castle's vast size is comparable to the Citadel of Carcassonne. Visitors today can explore the ruins, including the lower enclosure, the remains of military architecture, and the Saint Louis staircase carved into the stone. The chapel of San Jordi offers incredible views of the Corbières. Allow at least two hours to fully appreciate the site and its stunning surroundings. Note that a 15-20 minute uphill walk from the ticket office is required to reach the castle entrance.
