Overview

Nestled in the picturesque Ardèche department of France, the Basilique Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours de Lablachère is more than just a religious building; it's a repository of history, faith, and artistic expression. Located in the village of Lablachère, this basilica's story began in the 17th century and evolved into the impressive structure that stands today. The story begins in 1680 with Julien Gineste, a former guard of King Louis XIV, who retired to Lablachère. According to local lore, Gineste was thrown from his horse and, finding himself trapped, prayed to the Virgin Mary for salvation, promising to build a chapel in her honor. After his rescue, he initially neglected his vow but, after a similar incident the following year, he fulfilled his promise, erecting a small chapel and placing within it a statue of the Virgin Mary brought from Paris. This humble chapel, named Notre-Dame de Bon Secours (Our Lady of Good Help), quickly became a site of pilgrimage, attracting a growing number of devotees. As the number of pilgrims increased, the original chapel proved too small. In 1783, plans were initiated to construct a larger church. However, the French Revolution brought disruption, and the building was closed for a period. By the mid-19th century, the chapel was in disrepair, prompting the decision to build a new church. Construction began in 1829 and was completed in 1855. The new church was consecrated by Mgr Eugène de Mazenod, founder of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate. The Basilique Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours is designed in the Gothic Revival style, characterized by its pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and large windows. The basilica consists of three naves but lacks a transept or ambulatory. The exterior is adorned with statues of the four evangelists above the rose window. The main tympanum depicts the Virgin Mary seated on a throne, with the infant Jesus on her lap holding a globe. Below, a frieze shows the sick and disabled on one side and pilgrims on the other, all approaching the Virgin. The basilica's roof bears the inscription "Auxilium Christianorum, ora pro nobis" (Help of Christians, pray for us!). Inside, the basilica is equally impressive. The Chapel of Notre-Dame de Bon Secours, located at the back of the right aisle, houses the venerated statue of the Virgin Mary. The altar features twisted bronze columns supporting a table, and the retable is decorated with sculpted panels. The Saint Joseph Chapel, mirroring the Chapel of the Virgin, is simpler in design but maintains the same style. The basilica also features confessionals adorned with bas-reliefs depicting biblical scenes. The basilica's history is intertwined with the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, who were entrusted with the care of the sanctuary in 1846. They completed the church, added a bell tower, and made numerous embellishments. In 1880, the statue of the Virgin was crowned by the Archbishop of Paris. In 1930, the church was elevated to the rank of minor basilica. Today, the Basilique Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours continues to be a place of pilgrimage and worship. Visitors can admire the architecture, the artwork, and the collection of ex-voto offerings that line the pillars, testaments to answered prayers and divine intervention. The basilica is open daily, offering masses and opportunities for prayer and reflection. The sanctuary is maintained by priests of the diocese since 1995. Beyond its religious significance, the basilica is also a cultural landmark. Its location in Lablachère makes it a convenient stop for those exploring the Ardèche region. The village itself is surrounded by natural beauty, with rolling hills, vineyards, and forests. Visitors can also explore nearby attractions such as the Pont d'Arc, the Gorges de l'Ardèche, and the Aven d'Orgnac. The Basilique Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours de Lablachère offers a unique and enriching experience for visitors. Whether you are drawn by its religious history, its architectural beauty, or its serene atmosphere, the basilica is sure to leave a lasting impression. It is a place where faith, history, and art converge, creating a sanctuary of peace and inspiration.
