Overview
Château de Gourdon, located near Bollène in the Vaucluse department, is more than just a winery; it's a journey through centuries of Provençal history and winemaking tradition. Perched atop a rocky peak, the château commands breathtaking views of the surrounding Rhône Valley, offering visitors a feast for the eyes as well as the palate. The château's history stretches back to the 9th century when it was first built as a Saracen fortress. Its strategic location made it a vital stronghold, guarding the valley from invaders. Over the centuries, the fortress evolved, undergoing significant modifications in the 12th and 17th centuries. The Lombard family reconstructed the castle in the 17th century, giving it the appearance it has today. Today, visitors can still see remnants of the original Saracen fortress, including three round towers and a section of the northern wall. In 1235, the Château became the property of the Grasse family, Lords of Bar, and then the Villeneuve family. In 1597, it passed to Louis de Lombard, a lawyer at the Parliament of Provence. It was Louis de Lombard who transformed the fortress into a more pleasant residence. His son continued the embellishment work in 1610, creating the masterpiece of Gourdon: its gardens, designed according to drawings by Le Nôtre. These tiered gardens, supported by colossal arcades, offer a unique vantage point over the coast. The estate spans over 50 hectares of vineyards, benefiting from a Mediterranean climate and sandy soils. The vines include Grenache Blanc, Viognier, Grenache Noir, Syrah, and Carignan, as well as Clarette, Roussanne, Marsanne, Cinsault and Mourvedre. The estate is committed to sustainable agriculture, avoiding pesticides and herbicides, and the Mistral wind helps to keep pests at bay. The low yields enable high quality wines. Wine tasting at Château de Gourdon is an experience to savor. The knowledgeable staff shares their expertise on wine production, guiding visitors through the nuances of each vintage. The estate produces a diverse portfolio of wines, including Côtes du Rhône and Côtes du Rhône Villages Suze la Rousse appellations. Visitors can sample red, white, and rosé wines, each with its own unique character and complexity. The wines have received recognition at international wine competitions. Beyond its winemaking, Château de Gourdon is also a sought-after wedding venue. The château's ceremonial halls, covered terrace, and picturesque park provide a stunning backdrop for receptions, meetings, and seminars. The terrace offers views of the park, which can also be used to organize events. The château can accommodate up to 150 people, while the park can accommodate more than 500 people. The château winery has three apartments located in the castle and in the adjacent buildings, which can accommodate 4 to 10 people for a shorter or longer stay all year round. In the period from May through September the outdoor pool is also open, complementing perfectly the offer for a peaceful holiday by the vineyards. Visiting Château de Gourdon is a chance to step back in time and experience the beauty and charm of Provence. Whether you're a wine enthusiast, a history buff, or simply seeking a tranquil escape, Château de Gourdon offers an unforgettable experience. The blend of history, winemaking tradition, and stunning scenery makes it a must-visit destination in the Rhône Valley. The village of Gourdon itself is also worth exploring. Designated as one of the “Les Plus Beaux Villages de France”, Gourdon offers a glimpse into medieval history with its narrow, cobbled streets and traditional stone houses. Église Saint-Vincent, a 12th-century Romanesque church, is a prominent landmark in the village. The village offers panoramic views of the surrounding area. Château de Gourdon is easily accessible from major cities in the region. It is located near the A7 highway, which connects Lyon and Marseille. The nearest train station is in Bollène, which is about 10 kilometers from the château. There are also buses that run from Bollène to Gourdon. Whether you're planning a day trip or a longer stay, Château de Gourdon is a destination that will leave you with lasting memories. The combination of history, wine, and stunning scenery makes it a true gem of Provence.
