The Canal de Brienne, also known as Canal de Saint-Pierre, is a historic canal in Toulouse, France, that links the Garonne River to both the Canal du Midi and the Canal de Garonne. Stretching 1,560 meters (approximately 0.97 miles), it runs from Bazacle on the Garonne to its terminal basin at the junction with the Canal du Midi, near the Ponts Jumeaux (twin bridges).Construction of the canal was decided by the Estates of Languedoc in 1760 to make the city center accessible by waterway, as the Canal du Midi passed beyond the city walls. Work began in 1765, leading to the excavation of the canal and a port at the mouth of the two canals (at Ponts-Jumeaux). It was inaugurated on April 14, 1776. Initially named Canal Saint-Pierre, it was later renamed in honor of Étienne-Charles de Loménie de Brienne (1727–1794), the Archbishop of Toulouse. The Canal de Brienne has two locks: the Ecluse Saint-Pierre, which opens to the Garonne, and another lock near the Canal du Midi that typically remains open. The canal was designed to transport water from the Garonne to the Canal latéral à la Garonne and provide a navigable route to the port de la Daurade, situated in the center of Toulouse on the Garonne. In the 19th century, the Canal de Brienne became the main water inlet, supplying water to the Canal de Garonne.Today, the Canal de Brienne offers a peaceful escape from the bustling city, attracting locals and tourists alike. Lined with trees and flowers, it provides picturesque views of the surrounding architecture. Visitors can stroll along the banks, relax on benches, or enjoy a boat tour.
