Discover more about Castle Castelnou

The Château de Castelnou, also known as the Château Vicomtal, is a medieval castle in the commune of Castelnou, dating back to the 10th century. The village of Castelnou, one of the 'Most Beautiful Villages of France', developed around the castle, which was initially built between 988 and 990 to serve as the military and administrative center for the Viscounty of Vallespir. Occupied, coveted, and abandoned several times, the castle has witnessed a rich Catalan past and stands as one of the oldest examples of a medieval fortress in the Pyrénées-Orientales. Its irregular pentagonal design is adapted to the rocky terrain, providing a strategic defense. The castle was captured in 1286 and again in 1483 but was largely demolished in 1559 and fell into disrepair throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. In 1875, the castle was sold to Viscount Satgé, who restored it into an elegant and habitable fortress by 1900. After being ravaged by fire in 1972, it was sold in 1987 and has since been undergoing restoration. Today, visitors can explore the vaulted rooms and palatial halls, which house permanent exhibitions on the castle's history, including armor, weapons, and figures. From the terraces, enjoy panoramic views stretching to the sea and explore the Mediterranean botanical trail in the park. The castle hosts various events, including theatrical visits, medieval days, and workshops.
