Originally built by the Trencavels, Viscounts of Razès, the castle played a significant role during the Cathar era. Its strategic location controlled the passage between the Aude Valley and the Corbières, making it a key stronghold.Over the centuries, the castle was owned by several prominent families, including the Vilars, Fenouillets, and Montesquieus. In 1210, Simon de Montfort and his Crusaders found it abandoned, marking a turning point in its history. Today, the ruins are classified as a historical monument, and a preservation project is underway to safeguard them.Visitors can explore the castle's remains, admire the panoramic views of the Salz Valley, Couiza, and Rennes-le-Château, and learn about the ongoing efforts to preserve this important historical site.
