Chapelle des Carmélites, Languedoc Travel Guide

Nestled in the heart of Toulouse on the Rue de Périgord, the Chapelle des Carmélites is a testament to the city's rich artistic and religious history. This Baroque chapel, a former Carmelite convent, is often overlooked by tourists, making it a serene escape from the bustling city.Construction of the chapel began in 1622, with King Louis XIII laying the first stone. However, the King failed to provide the promised funding, and the chapel's completion was made possible by the President of Inquests for the Parliament of Toulouse, whose five daughters were Carmelites. The chapel's architecture is relatively simple, featuring a single nave and apse. However, the interior is lavishly decorated with magnificent ceilings and walls adorned with paintings by Jean-Pierre Rivals and Jean-Baptiste Despax. Rivals drew inspiration from the Sistine Chapel, creating a masterpiece of Toulouse painting.The chapel's painted vault ceiling depicts the origins of the Carmelite Order, devotion to the Virgin Mary, and the glorification of Saint Teresa. The apse features three pictures representing the Incarnation, while the half-dome displays prophets from the Old Testament. The chapel is the only remaining structure of the Carmelite convent that survived the French Revolution. Today, the Chapelle des Carmélites hosts cultural events, including exhibitions, festivals, recitals, and concerts.
