Discover more about Château de Quéribus

Château de Quéribus, a sentinel of the Corbières, stands as a powerful reminder of the Cathar resistance in southern France. Rising 728 meters above sea level, the castle occupies a strategic position on a narrow, rocky outcrop, offering commanding views of the surrounding landscape, from the Pyrenees to the Mediterranean. Originally mentioned in 1020, Quéribus became a significant fortress by 1162, guarding the northern approaches to Barcelona. During the Albigensian Crusade in the 13th century, it served as a refuge for Cathars fleeing persecution, under the leadership of Chabert de Barbaira. Quéribus was one of the last Cathar strongholds to fall to the French Crusaders in 1255. After its capture, Quéribus was integrated into the French defensive system, becoming one of the 'Five Sons of Carcassonne,' guarding the border with Aragon until 1659. The castle's architecture reflects its long and varied history, with elements from the 11th to the 16th centuries. Visitors can explore the three rings of defensive walls, the keep, the main hall, and the water cisterns, as well as arrow slits and angled walls designed to deflect projectiles. The 'Salle du Pilier' (Pillar Room), with its vaulted ceiling supported by a massive pillar, is particularly noteworthy. Today, Château de Quéribus is a listed historical monument, attracting visitors with its stunning location, rich history, and panoramic views. The site is open to the public year-round (except January), and a visit takes approximately 2 hours, including the 10-minute walk from the parking area to the castle entrance.
