The Couvent des Jacobins, located in the heart of Toulouse, is a stunning example of Southern French Gothic architecture. Founded in 1230 by the Dominican order, also known as the Jacobins, the monastery played a vital role in the religious and intellectual life of the city. The church's exterior is characterized by its austere brick facade and octagonal bell tower. However, the interior reveals a spacious and luminous nave, divided by a row of massive pillars supporting pointed arches. The most striking feature is the "palm tree" vault, where a single column branches out into 22 ribs, resembling the leaves of a palm. This architectural marvel allows for ample light to flood the interior through the long bay windows. The Couvent also features a peaceful cloister, constructed between 1307 and 1310, with 4 galleries supported by 160 marble columns. The cloister provides access to other parts of the monastery, including the chapter house, Saint-Antonin chapel and the refectory. Today, the Couvent des Jacobins serves as a museum and cultural center, hosting exhibitions and concerts. It is also the final resting place of St. Thomas Aquinas, whose relics are housed beneath the altar.Visiting the Couvent des Jacobins offers a unique glimpse into Toulouse's medieval past. The site is open to the public from Tuesday to Sunday, and guided tours are available. Don't miss the opportunity to explore this architectural gem and experience the tranquility of its cloister and gardens.
