    Discover more about Pont Neuf

The Pont Neuf, ironically named 'New Bridge,' is the oldest bridge spanning the Garonne River in Toulouse. This iconic structure, a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture, has connected the city for centuries. Construction began in 1544 under King Francis I, who envisioned it as a strategic asset against potential Spanish threats, and was completed in 1632. King Louis XIV inaugurated it in 1659.The bridge's design was innovative for its time, eschewing the common medieval practice of building houses and shops atop its structure, thus providing an open and clear passage. The Parisian architect Jacques Lemercier completed the bridge, incorporating elements of Roman and Italian Renaissance design. Its seven arches, of varying spans, rest upon sturdy piers fitted with oculi (openings) to relieve water pressure during floods. The bridge is not symmetrical, as the left bank of the Garonne is lower than the right.Over the centuries, the Pont Neuf has been a silent witness to Toulouse's history, surviving devastating floods, including the great flood of 1875 that destroyed all other bridges in the city. Today, it remains an integral part of Toulouse, hosting cultural events and offering panoramic views of the city.
