Discover more about LaM, Lille Métropole Musée d'art moderne, d'art contemporain et d'art brut

LaM, or Lille Métropole Musée d'art moderne, d'art contemporain et d'art brut, stands as a cultural gem in Villeneuve-d'Ascq, near Lille. This museum distinguishes itself by uniting modern art, contemporary creations, and art brut—also known as outsider art—within a single complex, enhanced by a scenic sculpture park. LaM is temporarily closed for renovations to improve visitor experience and is expected to reopen in February 2026 with a special exhibition dedicated to Vassily Kandinsky. The museum's origins trace back to Roger Dutilleul, an early collector of Cubism, and his nephew Jean Masurel. Masurel and his wife, Geneviève, donated their modern art collection to Lille, leading to the museum's establishment in 1983. Later, in 1999, the museum's holdings expanded significantly with the addition of an art brut collection from L'Aracine association. Architect Roland Simounet designed the original building in 1983, with Manuelle Gautrand designing an expansion completed in 2010. LaM showcases over 8,000 works, including paintings, sculptures, drawings, and installations. Visitors can explore works by renowned artists such as Picasso, Braque, Modigliani, Miró, and Léger, alongside creations by outsider artists. The sculpture park features monumental pieces by Calder, Deacon, and Picasso, blending art with nature. The museum also houses a library with over 40,000 books. While the museum is closed, LaM is offering off-site activities throughout the Lille European Metropolis and the Hauts-de-France region.
