Discover more about Palais Rihour

The Palais Rihour stands as a testament to Lille's rich history and its time under Burgundian rule. Originally constructed between 1453 and 1473 for Philip the Good, the Duke of Burgundy, the palace served as his urban residence when visiting Lille. The location near the Grand Place (Place du Général de Gaulle) was strategically important for trade and symbolized ducal power. Designed in the flamboyant Gothic style, the Palais Rihour boasted impressive architectural details, including mullioned windows and ribbed vaults. The palace witnessed significant historical events, including the signing of the Treaty of Lille in 1667. Over the centuries, the Palais Rihour served various functions, including a town hall in 1664. Unfortunately, multiple fires ravaged the palace, with the most devastating occurring in 1916. This fire led to the demolition of most of the structure, leaving only the chapel, the 15th-century staircase, and the guardroom intact. Today, the guardroom serves as the Lille Tourist Office, providing information and local products to visitors. While the Salle du Conclave and the sacristy are temporarily closed for renovations with a planned reopening in May 2025, they typically host cultural events and exhibitions. Despite the extensive damage, the Palais Rihour remains a significant landmark, offering a glimpse into Lille's past and its architectural heritage.
