Discover more about Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church at Lille

The Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, located in the heart of Lille, stands as a testament to both architectural grandeur and spiritual devotion. Situated at the intersection of Rue Nationale and Rue Solférino, this church has been a significant landmark in Lille-Centre since the late 19th century. The church's origins lie in a vow made on October 7, 1870, by the Women's Association of the Children of Mary of the Sacred Heart, seeking to protect Lille from Prussian invasion during the Franco-Prussian War. Architect Jules Batigny designed the church in the Neo-Gothic style, constructing it in two phases between 1875 and 1898. The second phase included the addition of the Chapel of the Vow, an apsidal chapel behind the choir adorned with eleven stained-glass windows, fulfilling a separate vow by local women for a dedicated space for prayer. The Sacred Heart Church is one of Lille's largest, measuring 90 meters long, 24 meters wide, and 22 meters high under the main vault. Its design features a basilical layout with a surrounding ambulatory. The transept is illuminated by three rows of openings, including a rose window and depictions of the four evangelists. The church's eleven stained-glass windows have been classified as historical landmarks since 1983. The 75-meter bell tower, completed in 1928 by Charles Sarazin using reinforced concrete, underwent extensive restoration from 2005 to 2008. Visitors can appreciate the intricate facade, stained glass windows, and the serene atmosphere within. While the carillon's bells have been silent in recent years and some canopies await restoration, the church remains a significant cultural and spiritual site.
