Discover more about Marché de Wazemmes

Marché de Wazemmes is more than just a market; it's a sensory and multicultural experience and a true celebration of local and international life. Located in the Wazemmes neighborhood, around 1.6km southwest of the city center, the market has been a Lille institution for over a century. The market consists of a permanent iron-framed covered market hall, known as the Halles de Wazemmes, and temporary outdoor stalls set up on Place de la Nouvelle-Aventure. The Halles de Wazemmes were constructed between 1869 and 1873 in the Baltard style, reminiscent of the central markets of Paris. Inside the hall, vendors offer fresh fruit and vegetables, ready-to-eat dishes, meats, cheeses, baked goods, fish and seafood, regional sausages, and other specialty items. The outdoor market operates three times a week: Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday. Sunday is the busiest day, with over 400 stalls spanning the entire Place de la Nouvelle-Aventure and nearby streets, drawing crowds of up to 50,000 people. Here, you can find everything from fresh produce and local specialties to clothing, household appliances, and exotic goods. The market is a melting pot of cultures, with vendors offering culinary specialties from around the world. The history of the market dates back to the 19th century when Wazemmes was an independent commune before being annexed by Lille in 1858. The market has retained its character over the years, reflecting the area's multicultural fabric and working-class roots. Today, it remains a cornerstone of daily life in Wazemmes, a social space where people from all walks of life come together.
