Getting There

Car

From Limoges, head east on the N520 towards Saint-Jean-Ligoure. After approximately 20 km, take the exit toward D9. Continue on D9 for about 5 km until you see signs for Château de Châlucet. Follow these signs to the castle, located at Lieu Dit, Tours de Chalusset, 87260 Saint-Jean-Ligoure. Parking is available near the site and is usually free.
Public Transport

From Limoges city center, go to the Limoges Bénédictins train station. Take a train towards Saint-Junien and get off at the Saint-Jean-Ligoure station. From there, it is approximately a 30-minute walk to the chateau. Head southeast on Rue de la Gare, then turn left onto D4. Continue until you see the signs for Château de Châlucet. A single train ticket from Limoges to Saint-Jean-Ligoure costs approximately €5-€10.

Château de Châlucet, also known as Chalusset, is a ruined castle located in the commune of Saint-Jean-Ligoure, approximately 10 km south of Limoges, in the Haute-Vienne department. The castle's ruins stand on a rocky promontory at the meeting point of the Briance and Ligoure rivers.Originally built in the 13th century by Bishop Eustorge, the castle was later ceded to the French king, Philip IV. Throughout its history, it served as a defensive stronghold and witnessed sieges, battles, and changes in ownership. It was a refuge for Huguenots during the Wars of Religion. In 1539, the townspeople of Limoges secured its demolition.The fortress is divided into two parts: the upper Châlucet, situated on a rocky overcrop, and the lower Châlucet, featuring the square keep of the 12th century, called "Tour Jeanette". Visitors can explore the castle grounds, climb the towers for panoramic views, and learn about the site's history through informative signage and guided tours. The site is open year-round, with free access for self-guided visits. Guided tours are available from April to November.
