Discover more about Ouvrage de La Ferté

Ouvrage de La Ferté, also known as Ouvrage Villy-La Ferté, is a petit ouvrage (small work) of the Maginot Line, located in the Fortified Sector of Montmédy. Constructed between 1935 and 1937, it was intended to halt the German advance at the French border. However, in May 1940, it became the site of one of the most tragic episodes of the Battle of France. After four days of intense combat, the entire crew of 105 men died of asphyxiation in the gallery connecting its two blocks. The ouvrage (structure) is now a memorial site, maintained by a team of volunteers. Visitors can take a guided tour to explore the depths of the fortification, gaining insight into the lives of the soldiers who were stationed there. The tour includes a visit to Block 1, which served as an infantry casemate and main entrance. Ouvrage de La Ferté is more than just a historical site; it's a place of remembrance. It offers a chance to reflect on the sacrifices made during the war and to understand the impact of this structure on the history of France. The surrounding Ardennes countryside adds to the somber atmosphere, providing a beautiful yet poignant backdrop to this important memorial.
