Discover more about Place Stanislas

Place Stanislas, often called the most beautiful square in Europe, is a large pedestrianized public square in Nancy, France. Built between 1752 and 1756, it was commissioned by Stanislas Leszczyński, the former King of Poland and Duke of Lorraine, to link Nancy's medieval old town and the 17th-century new town. The square also served as a place royale to honor his son-in-law, King Louis XV. The square is surrounded by architecturally harmonious buildings, including the City Hall (Hôtel de Ville), the Opera House, the Fine Arts Museum, and the Grand Hôtel de la Reine. These buildings, designed by Emmanuel Héré, exemplify French classicism. The square is adorned with gilded wrought-iron gates and lanterns by Jean Lamour, as well as ornate fountains designed by Barthélemy Guibal. The statue of Stanislas, erected in 1831, stands in the center of the square, replacing a former statue of Louis XV. Place Stanislas has served as a venue for public assemblies and festivities throughout its history. It underwent a major restoration in 2004-2005 to revive its original 18th-century splendor. Today, Place Stanislas is a vibrant cultural hub, hosting events like the "Rendez-vous Place Stanislas," a summer sound and light show that illuminates its history and architecture. The square, along with Place de la Carrière and Place d'Alliance, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983, recognized for its unique artistic achievement and innovative urban design.
