Arc de Triomphe: A Gateway to Montpellier's Past

Montpellier's Arc de Triomphe, a proud monument at the entrance to the Promenade du Peyrou, stands as a tribute to King Louis XIV and his influence on the region. Designed by architect François d'Orbay, a student of Mansart, it was erected in 1692, replacing one of the gates of the old ramparts. The arch symbolizes the power of royalty and provides access to what was once an equestrian statue dedicated to the king.The Arc de Triomphe is adorned with intricate details, including medallions, bas-reliefs, and an attic tinted in ochre and yellow. An inscription in Latin translates to: 'Louis the Great, whose reign lasted seventy-two years, brought peace on land and sea after having separated, containing and attaching himself to allied peoples in a forty-year war'. The monument's design, inspired by the Porte Saint-Martin in Paris, showcases a classical Doric style.While smaller than its Parisian counterpart, Montpellier's Arc de Triomphe stands 15 meters high and 18 meters wide, with a portico opening of 4.70 meters and a height of 7 meters. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the city and surrounding countryside from the top of the arch via guided tours organized by the Montpellier Tourist Office during the summer. The nearby Promenade du Peyrou and Place de la Comédie offer further exploration of Montpellier's historical and cultural attractions.
