This battle, fought in 1302 on the Groeninge battlefield (Groeningekouter) where the park now lies, saw Flemish peasants triumph over a French army, a victory that resonated deeply throughout the region.The monument, designed by sculptor Godfried Devreese, was inaugurated in 1906. The gilded bronze statue features the Virgin of Flanders holding a spear pointed towards France, while her other hand restrains the Flemish Lion who broke free of its shackles, representing Flanders' resistance and fierce independence. The Groeninge Gate, a triumphal arch erected in 1908, stands nearby, marking the entrance to the park and bearing the inscription “1302 - Groeningheveld,” further solidifying the park's historical significance.Below the statue, a sculpture depicts Robert II of Artois, who was the grandson of the French king Louis. Robert II of Artois was also the governor of Flanders, who died under his horse.
