Château du Champ de Bataille: A Norman Versailles

The Château du Champ de Bataille, situated in the Eure department of Normandy, stands as a testament to French Baroque architecture and garden design. Built between 1653 and 1665 for Alexandre de Créquy, the château's construction was spurred by his exile from Louis XIV's court. De Créquy sought to create a palace reminiscent of Versailles, showcasing his power and status.Over the centuries, the château passed through various hands, including the Harcourt family, who expanded it in the 18th century. It faced periods of neglect, serving as a hospice, housing German officers during World War II, and even functioning as a women's prison. In 1992, interior designer Jacques Garcia purchased the estate and began an extensive restoration, reviving both the château and its gardens.Today, visitors can explore the opulent interiors, filled with Garcia's collection of furniture and curiosities. The gardens, spanning 45 hectares, feature French formal designs, botanical collections, and contemporary elements. Fountains, sculptures, and meticulously designed parterres evoke the grandeur of the era. The gardens are designed to represent the seven degrees of creation, offering a philosophical journey through the landscape. The site also has a large parking area for visitors.
