Overview

Clairefontaine Racecourse, officially known as Hippodrome de Deauville-Clairefontaine, is more than just a horse racing venue; it's a vibrant destination that encapsulates the charm and elegance of the Normandy region. Situated in Tourgéville, a short distance from the famed resort town of Deauville, the racecourse offers a unique blend of sporting excitement, cultural experiences, and family-friendly entertainment. Opened on August 8, 1928, Clairefontaine quickly gained recognition for its picturesque setting and diverse racing program. In 1936, it was nicknamed “little Clairefontaine”. Unlike many other racecourses that specialize in a single discipline, Clairefontaine distinguishes itself as a tri-discipline track, hosting flat racing, steeplechase (jump racing), and trotting races. This versatility makes it the only racecourse of its kind in Normandy, attracting a wide range of equestrian enthusiasts. The history of Clairefontaine is intertwined with the broader narrative of horse racing in France. The sport gained popularity in the mid-19th century, mirroring the rise of seaside resorts as fashionable destinations for the aristocracy and Parisian bourgeoisie. Deauville, with its proximity to Paris, emerged as a prominent center for horse racing, and the establishment of Clairefontaine further solidified this reputation. During World War II, the racecourse was closed in September 1939 and only reopened in 1949. Over the years, Clairefontaine has undergone several expansions and improvements to enhance the visitor experience. In 1937, the racetrack expanded by purchasing land in Tourgéville, where two large tracks were built, flat and steeplechase and had its first races during the summer of 1937. In 1999, the track also had its first obstacle course. In 2006, it became the first racecourse in France to offer a night meeting. Today, Clairefontaine Racecourse spans 40 acres (16 hectares) and can accommodate up to 7,000 spectators, with seating for 700 in the stands. The turf track for flat races is 2,000 meters long, with courses ranging from 1,200 to 3,400 meters. The hurdle races cover distances from 2,700 to 3,600 meters, while steeplechase races range from 3,400 to 4,300 meters. The trotting track measures 1,350 meters. What truly sets Clairefontaine apart is its commitment to creating a festive and engaging atmosphere for all visitors. Each race day features a unique theme, adding an element of surprise and excitement to the proceedings. These themed days often include special activities, entertainment, and culinary offerings that complement the racing program. Beyond the races themselves, Clairefontaine offers a variety of attractions and amenities. Art exhibitions are a regular feature, showcasing the work of local and regional artists. The racecourse shop provides a platform for artists to display their creations, adding a touch of culture to the sporting environment. For families with children, Clairefontaine provides a range of activities to keep the little ones entertained. Pony rides, games, and supervised childcare are available, ensuring that parents can enjoy the races while their children are well-cared for. Guided tours of the racecourse are offered on race day mornings, providing visitors with a behind-the-scenes look at the inner workings of the facility. These tours offer insights into the history of Clairefontaine, the training of the horses, and the intricacies of the racing industry. The tours often conclude with a tasting of local Norman products, such as cheese, cider, and pommeau, providing a delicious introduction to the region's culinary heritage. Clairefontaine also boasts a range of dining options to suit all tastes and budgets. A panoramic restaurant offers stunning views of the track, while a terrace and picnic area provide more casual settings for enjoying a meal or snack. Several bars, including the Brok Café, Mumm champagne bar, and Round bar, offer a variety of beverages to quench your thirst. The racecourse features three car parks with 1,200 spaces in total. It is also open to the public free of charge every weekday afternoon in July and August. Free pony baptisms with graduation, in which three ponies, one double pony, and one team are on the racetrack. Moreover, it offers a free and supervised daycare during afternoon races, organized on a different theme each day, subject to availability. Whether you're a seasoned horse racing aficionado or simply looking for a fun and memorable day out, Clairefontaine Racecourse offers something for everyone. Its blend of sporting excitement, cultural attractions, and family-friendly activities makes it a true gem of the Normandy region. So, come and experience the thrill of the races, soak in the atmosphere, and create lasting memories at Clairefontaine Racecourse.
