Fort de Brégançon, a historic monument, sits on a rocky peak 35 meters above the Mediterranean Sea, near Bormes-les-Mimosas. Its strategic location has been recognized since the 6th century BCE when it was a Ligurian oppidum. Over the centuries, it evolved from a fortified manor into a royal fortress, playing a key role in coastal defense.In 1924, after World War I, the fort was designated a picturesque site. It gained prominence in 1968 when General de Gaulle designated it as the official presidential residence. Many French presidents, including Pompidou, Giscard d'Estaing, Mitterrand, Chirac, Sarkozy, Hollande, and Macron, have stayed here. The fort has hosted international figures such as German Chancellor Angela Merkel.Visitors can explore the fort's architecture and learn about its history through guided tours. The tour includes the guard room and offers historical insights. The fort is managed by the Center des Monuments Nationaux and has been open to the public since 2014. Tickets must be booked in advance at the Bormes-les-Mimosas Tourist Office or online.Note that the fort is not accessible to people with reduced mobility due to its elevated location and the tour is conducted on foot.
