Discover more about Pont du Gard

The Pont du Gard, a magnificent Roman aqueduct bridge, stands as a lasting symbol of Roman engineering prowess. Constructed in the 1st century AD, it was built to carry water over 50 kilometers to the Roman colony of Nemausus, now Nîmes. The aqueduct supplied approximately 30,000 to 40,000 cubic meters of water daily to the city's inhabitants, baths, fountains, and gardens. Rising almost 50 meters above the Gardon River, the Pont du Gard is the highest Roman aqueduct bridge in the world. Its three tiers of arches, constructed from massive stones without mortar, demonstrate the remarkable precision and skill of Roman engineers. The bridge is a UNESCO World Heritage site, recognized for its exceptional preservation, historical significance, and architectural ingenuity. Visitors can explore the Pont du Gard and its surroundings, including the museum, which delves into the history of the aqueduct and Roman civilization. Walking trails offer scenic views of the bridge and the Gardon River, and in the summer, the riverbanks transform into beaches, perfect for a refreshing break. The site also hosts a sound and light show in the summer evenings, illuminating the monument and creating a magical experience.
