Pont Roman de Mane: A Testament to Time

The Pont Roman de Mane, often misleadingly called a "Roman bridge," is actually a Romanesque bridge that gracefully spans the Laye River in Mane, a charming village in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. This historical monument, dating back to the 12th or 13th century, stands as a testament to medieval engineering and architectural prowess. Originally built along the road connecting Apt to Sisteron, the bridge now serves as a pedestrian walkway, inviting visitors to step back in time. The bridge is constructed with three arches, with the largest arch believed to be the only original medieval component. The two smaller arches on the east side were added in the 17th century to replace embankments swept away by a flood. The design incorporates beaks, masonry spurs that protect the structure from the impact of floods and torrential waters.
