This displacement pushed Iberia closer to Corsica and Sardinia, resulting in great compression of the plates, transforming the horizontal layers into vertical folds. The formation of the Alps around 35 million years ago further deformed the region. Erosion by wind, rain, and frost sculpted the rock, removing softer layers and leaving behind the resistant limestone strata. The Rocher de la Baume stands aligned with other iconic landforms like Mont Ventoux, Montagne de Lure, and Montagne Sainte-Victoire. The rock has played a strategic role in the defense of Sisteron, also known as the “Gateway to Provence”.
